Cities as playgrounds: Oyun İstanbul as a case study

Abstract

This paper introduces the transformative initiative Oyun İstanbul, which aims to make playing an integral part of urban life in Istanbul. The paper highlights the decline in outdoor play in modern cities and the need for sustainable, inclusive, and accessible spaces that encourage social interaction and physical activity. Prioritizing children’s right to play, the Oyun İstanbul initiative aims to transform Istanbul from a city of playgrounds into a playable city where public spaces are designed in collaboration with children and young people. The paper demonstrates how participatory design encourages community involvement and improves the urban environment through a range of pilot projects. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating nature into play, creating inclusive public spaces, and using tactical urbanism approaches to provide safe, enjoyable, and diverse play experiences. Ultimately, the Oyun İstanbul movement serves as a model for cities worldwide, advocating for a holistic approach to play that enriches community life and supports children’s developmental needs.
