Abstract
This research paper undertakes a comparative analysis of low-cost construction techniques with the aim of facilitating affordable housing solutions in India, where a significant portion of the population faces income constraints. With only 20% of the population earning higher incomes, ensuring housing costs remain within 30% of household income is imperative. The study focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of various construction methodologies, particularly emphasizing masonry wall and slab construction, in achieving cost efficiency, structural sustainability, and longevity. Emphasizing the importance of innovative construction approaches, such as the “rat trap bond, filler slab” methodology and the utilization of locally available materials like laterite stone, the paper aims to reduce construction costs while maintaining structural integrity. Through a comprehensive comparative analysis considering factors such as initial construction expenses, long-term maintenance costs, structural strength, and durability, the research provides valuable insights for policymakers, construction professionals, and stakeholders. The findings aim to address the urgent need for affordable housing solutions, contributing to sustainable and cost-effective practices in residential construction and promoting inclusive urban development to enhance living standards for marginalized communities in India and other developing countries.
